From Oudtshoorn to Grahamstown

Monday the 25th

So it took a while to get to Grahamstown because it was about a 7 hour drive. Grahamstown is where Rhodes University is located, but they were on summer break so we weren't able to meet with some contacts we had there. The actual ride from Oudtshoorn to Grahamstown was nice, but I was in the back seat most of the time. The scenery is unbelievable! We stopped several times for petrol along the way and we picked up Bertha before the bulk of our journey since she was being fixed from the day before. We stopped for a fast food lunch in Port Elizabeth along the way and finally ended up in Grahamstown around late afternoon/early evening. I facebook chatted (SHOUT OUT) Margie before dinner.

We ate dinner at an Italian restaurant at the hotel and had a discussion from after dinner into late evening. I was supposed to have read more articles that night for discussions the next days but I fell right asleep right after our night class session. Don't worry, I found time to read the articles before our next class session though! This night I had a single room to myself. (I forgot to say in Oudtshoorn there were 4 of us to a room).

END DAY 6

From Barrydale to Oudtshoorn

Okay, so I am sorry that you know a lot of the stories before they hit my blog but I can't skip ahead, I just feel like I have to post in chronological order so yeah.

Anyway, Sunday January 24th, 2010 was a good day. We got up early at Barrydale and packed the vans which we have now become attached to and we have decided are sisters named Beulah and Bertha. They are two white toyota 10 passenger vans.

We only drove a couple hours to Oudtshoorn where half the group went to lunch and half the group went to the caves because Bertha was not cooperating that day and we ended up losing her for a day so she could be fixed. I was in the lunch group so I got French Onion Soup which was pretty good, but not as good as Ponzio's.

Then we walked to a super market and bought some things in town and walked back to our hotel from there. It was a short walk into town from the hotel and the hotel was a really nice place. I kept the brochure because when I skyped with some people that night they kept laughing saying I sounded like I was in a forest with bugs.

That night we had pizza for dinner after I had napped for 3 hours. I was not feeling too well that whole day so the nap felt great. Then I had to stay up most of the night after dinner writing a paper in response to an article we had read. I also did the majority of blog posts that are now up that night too.

Finally updating over a week ago

Saturday, 23 January 2010

Saturday morning breakfast at the vineyard was very similar to the breakfast at Signal Hill Lodge in Cape Town. We ate our food outside on the patio where we had dinner the night before. Then we had class shortly after breakfast and packing up the 2 vans. Class was about 2 hours outside on lounge chairs put into a circle. We discussed the contrast of the events the day before. After class ended we packed up and drove on to a gas station to fill up and grab lunch on the go.

After a couple hours we arrived in a very small town called Barrydale. We stayed at a very interesting inn. It was a nice place but we didn't get our own bathroom for each room so all 13 of us would have had to share a shower and a toilet and to make it even better, there were no lights so after dark the rooms were pitch black. I don't think many of us got a shower that night.

We ate dinner at a Meditteranean Restaurant directly below the inn. I had Greek Chicken with Feta in a Pastry. It was very delicious! After dinner we had another class session for an hour discussing an article we were supposed to have read. By the time we had free time it was 10pm so I just read some of Nelson Mandela and went to sleep.

P.S. The room arrangements changed every different place we stay. In Cape Town I had 1 roommate all 3 nights. In Stellenbosch I had 2 roommates and the same for Saturday night in Barrydale.
